Data Matrix and GS1 DataMatrix codes printed on labels, stickers, tags and packaging: one code for every item, or a unique code on each one from your spreadsheet.
Ideal for serial numbers, part numbers, batch codes and retail products. Printed and test-scanned in Maidstone, Kent.
A Data Matrix code is a small square or rectangular 2D barcode made of black and white cells, with a solid L-shaped border on two sides. It holds far more than a traditional barcode in a much smaller space, and it can still be read when part of it is scuffed or damaged. People sometimes call them dot matrix codes, but the correct name is Data Matrix.
Unlike a QR code, a Data Matrix code is usually read by a barcode scanner rather than a phone camera, so it suits labels, parts and products more than marketing.
GS1 DataMatrix is a Data Matrix code that follows the GS1 standard, so retailers and distributors can read your product number, batch and expiry date from one code. Under GS1's "Sunrise 2027" programme, retail scanners are moving to read 2D codes such as GS1 DataMatrix and GS1 Digital Link QR codes alongside traditional barcodes. Your product numbers come from GS1 UK; send us the data from your GS1 account and we'll print the codes and test them before the full run.
Not sure which you need? Our QR code and variable data printing page compares them side by side.
Send us a spreadsheet with one row per label, such as serial numbers, part numbers or GS1 data, and we'll print a unique Data Matrix code on each one, in order, alongside any text that changes. We check a printed proof with a scanner before the full run.
Setting the file up yourself? Our free Mangoprint Prepress PDF app can mail merge Data Matrix and GS1 Data Matrix codes from a CSV or Excel file straight into your PDF.

The correct name is Data Matrix. Dot matrix usually means an old type of printer, or codes stamped into metal parts as a pattern of dots. If you've been asked for a 'dot matrix code' on a label, it's almost always a Data Matrix code.
Some phones and apps can, but not every phone camera reads them. For codes customers will scan with a phone, we recommend a QR code.
Much smaller than a QR code holding the same data, because it's read by a barcode scanner. The right size depends on how much data it holds and the scanner used, so tell us and we'll advise.
